Overcoming Adversity
Pastor Wallace Wasson grew up in a loving and accepting home, yet faced challenges being the only person with Afrocentric features in his community. Born in 1976, Pastor Wasson was raised primarily by his grandmother, who exemplified God’s love. Despite the loving environment, he struggled with feeling out of place due to his appearance.
At 14, Pastor Wasson moved to inner-city Los Angeles, where he began to fit in and feel attractive among his peers. He adopted a street life, eventually becoming one of the biggest drug dealers in Southern California by age 17. His illegal activities led to his arrest, but he was offered a deal and, after serving time, he obtained his GED and had his record expunged.
A Divine Turning Point
While in juvenile hall, Pastor Wasson had a life-changing experience. He picked up a King James New Testament Bible left by his roommate and, despite being dyslexic, found himself able to read and understand it. This miraculous moment led him to hear the Holy Spirit, who revealed that God had been protecting him throughout his life.
This divine encounter motivated Pastor Wasson to abandon his criminal life and embark on a spiritual journey. He discovered that his experiences, from his challenging upbringing to his involvement in street life, were part of God’s plan to give him the ability to empathize and connect with people from diverse backgrounds.
